William Stanley Baird Jr.

William Stanley Baird, Jr. passed away March 11, 2015. He was born June 29, 1935 in Fairfield, AL to William Stanley and Vera Morse Baird. He grew up in Bessemer, Alabama and graduated from Bessemer High School in 1955. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1957 with a BS in Commerce and Business Administration. While at the University, he was President (#1) of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honorary fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi and Jasons. He was also active in the Student Government Association and President of the Cotillion Club. He was listed in Who’s Who Colleges and Universities. After graduation Bill worked for TCI (US Steel) for 6 years before joining Alabama Metal Industries Corporation in 1964 where he retired in 2005 as Chairman of the Board. Bill was on the Planning and Zoning board for the City of Hoover for over 20 years, President of Green Valley Country Club (now Hoover CC), and active in the community of Riverchase. He was a member of the Birmingham Rotary Club and the Monday Morning Quarterback Club. He completed the Small Company Management Program at Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Cowan Baird, son, John Stanley Baird (Patsy) and daughter, Leigh Baird Chandler (Chris); grandchildren, the Rev. J. Brady Baird (Mallory), Anna Baird Galloway (Mitch), Christine Cowan Chandler, Nora Spencer Banks (Taylor), Hope Jennings Spencer and Olivia Anne Yocum; great grandchildren, Evelyn and Eliza Baird and Morris and Lucy Banks. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Elmwood Chapel for visitation and fellowship. Graveside services and interment will be held privately for the family. In lieu of flower, the family requests donations to be given to the Big Oak Ranch, P.O. Box 507, Springville, AL 35146 or to the charity of your choice.
