LARKIN, VARA OLETA JEFFCOAT March 12, 1912 -November 17, 2011 Vara Oleta Jeffcoat Larkin passed away Thursday, 4:40pm. She had recently had hip surgery and was recovering when she contracted pneumonia and died from complications. She was the sixth child born of eleven brothers and sisters in Pike County, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her father Thomas Blakely Jeffcoat and her mother Tula Elizabeth Jeffcoat. Vara was the last surviving member of her generation. Vara Jeffcoat married James Robert Larkin, Sr. on July 10th, 1932. Together they had three sons: James Robert Larkin, Jr.(Linda) of Birmingham, United Methodist Ministers Rev. Malcolm E. Larkin (Jane), Birmingham, and Rev. Russell Eugene Larkin (Sophia) McLean, Virginia. James Robert Larkin, Sr. retired from U.S. Steel (1969), and passed away November 13, 1986. In addition to her three sons, Vara Larkin is survived by grandchildren: Ben Larkin (Paige) Jenny Coyne (Patrick) Katy Larkin, Rusty Larkin (Christina) James Jay Larkin (Jessica) Claiborne Dru Larkin; and great grandchildren: Malcolm Larkin, Margaret Ruth "Meg" Larkin, Seamus Coyne, Brady Coyne, Nicholas and Noah Larkin, Kadie Gayle Larkin, and Samuel Archer Larkin. Vara Larkin was a long time member of Ensley First United Methodist Church, member of the Administrative Board, the United Methodist Women, and Coordinator of meals served in the Joe Sessions Fellowship Hall. For many years she helped prepare meals for the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, and Ensley First Administrative Board. She also played the piano with passion for her Sunday School class. She also was President of the Parent Teachers Association at Baker Elementary School. When Ensley First United Methodist Church was closed, she moved her membership to Central Park United Methodist Church until her passing. Services for will be held for Vara Larkin at Elmwood Chapel, 1:00 pm. Monday, November 21, 2011. Visitation will be from 11:30a.m. to 1:00 pm. Monday. Dr. Bill Morgan, Canterbury UMC, officiating. A graveside committal service will be Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 11:00a.m. at Wingard Cemetery, Troy, Alabama.
