Thomas P. Johnson (Colonel), a distinguished public servant whose career spanned over 40 years, passed away on August 11th, 2024, at the age of 86. Thomas began his career as a police officer, demonstrating unwavering dedication and integrity before transitioning to 911 dispatch, where he continued to serve with distinction.
Born on May 21st, 1938, in Birmingham, Thomas dedicated his life to ensuring the safety and well-being of his community. His years as a police officer were marked by his commitment to justice and protection. Later, as a 911 dispatcher, he was renowned for his calm demeanor, quick thinking, and compassionate handling of emergencies.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosemary Johnson, who passed away in 2014, and his parents Thomas and Cassie Johnson.
He is survived by his daughter Velvet Wayand (Ellis) of Hartselle, Grandson Jake Wayand of Hartselle, Granddaughter Kassie Carr (Justin) of Cullman, Great Granddaughter Gracie Thomas, Great Grandson Jason Carr, Sister Emily Mims (Walter Deceased), and Nephew Walter Mims (Bianca) and his Irondale Police Department family.
A memorial service to celebrate Tom Johnson’s life will be held on August 16th, 2024, at Elmwood Cemetery 800 Dennison Ave SW Birmingham, AL 25211. Visitation will be 11:00 to 1:00, Service to start at 1:00 with graveside following. All is welcome to attend and share in honoring Tom’s memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Birmingham Humane Society or St. Jude.
Thomas P. Johnson’s legacy of service, courage, and compassion will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
