Terry Franklin Farmer, 71, of Birmingham went to be with the Lord Friday morning, September 29. A graduate of Jacksonville State University and Ensley High School, Terry had a successful 30-year sales, marketing and business career with Georgia-Pacific, Bird & Son, and American Wholesale Inc. and his own company.
After recovering from alcoholism, Terry made it his purpose to help others win the battle of addiction, and to show them God’s role in it. The name of his coaching brand Living Again Intervention spoke to his renewed faith and his gratitude, and his desire to help others.
As a volunteer at Turning Point in recent years, Terry taught classes and led Bible studies, while personally sponsoring and coaching more than 50 men going through the program. Terry also initiated a sponsorship program for incoming residents at Turning Point, and raised thousands of dollars to help those who needed assistance to break free from addiction. Trained in the Arise Intervention method, Terry also gained certification as a drug intervention specialist.
A history enthusiast, Terry enjoyed reading autobiographies. Masterful at storytelling, Terry found delight in entertaining others. As a movie buff, he could quote dialogue from many of his favorites, especially Westerns.
Initially sparked by cross-country family trips as a child, Terry’s interest in Western folklore lasted a lifetime. He and his wife Lisa attended Doc Holliday festivals, and two of his three English bulldogs were named Doc Holliday and Annie Oakley; the other called LL.
An avid Alabama football fan, Terry also took great pride in his alma mater Jacksonville State where he had served as President of Delta Chi Fraternity. Earlier in life, he enjoyed hunting, and he and his wife Lisa went on safaris in Africa. A member of Church of the Highlands – Riverchase for several years, Terry was originally a member of Vinesville Baptist Church.
Terry is survived by his sister Joy Farmer Dunlap and brother-in-law Charlie Dunlap, two aunts Loretta Veasey and Waverlyn Shaneyfelt; brothers-and sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and many lifetime and new friends. Terry was preceded in death by the love of his life, Lisa Stephen Farmer; his mom Deane Farmer and his dad Frank Farmer.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to your local church, animal support organization, or rehab center would honor Terry’s life in a meaningful way.
