Shirley Starns Hughes was born December 7, 1953 in Birmingham, Alabama and went to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at the age of 66. She was a loving and devoted wife, sister, aunt, and friend who was very much loved and will be greatly missed. Shirley truly loved serving her Lord and Savior and she and her husband, John were members of Double Oak Mountain Community Church since it’s very origin. She was a master hair colorist for more than 48 years, who trained in Europe and all over the United States and was well known by many in her profession. But most of all she loved being around her family and friends, staying up with everything going on with them, and helping serve her church family as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Grady Starns, Sr. and Clara Hutson Starns; a brother, Henry G. Starns, Jr; nephew, Millard Glenn Starns; and a great niece, Robin Oden Stone. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 18 years, John J. Nix; her sister, Linda Sides of Montgomery, Alabama; and a great niece, Lisa Starns Carden of Springville, Alabama; Shirley and John enjoyed spoiling their loved family pets, Mo, Fuse, Brodie, and GG who will greatly miss her also.
Chapel services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel at 11 am with visitation beginning at 10 am. Burial will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, Alabama. ( Rev Adam Robinson and Michael Abrams will officiate.) A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 5th, 2020 in Mt. Laurel at Double Oak Community Church, 115 Olmsted Street, Birmingham, AL 35242, beginning at 1 pm.
