November 23, 1937 – August 1, 2019
Sherry Laney Doss age 81 died August 1, 2019. Born in Bridgeport Alabama she also grew up living in Panama City, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia before settling in Birmingham Alabama. She graduated from Brown High School in Atlanta. She was an earnest student and athletically active, having earned a varsity letter for playing on the girls basketball team while at Brown. This love of sports continued throughout her adult life. Her preferred activity, bowling, continued well into her seventies. She participated in many bowling leagues in Birmingham and competed in WBA national amateur tournaments for over forty years.
A professional career woman, Ms. Doss worked as a Legal Secretary and Paralegal for Sirote & Permutt in Birmingham for thirty years. Having been born into a generation when women were not always encouraged to pursue or as easily accepted into the professional ranks, she nonetheless persisted, attending adult education night school classes including paralegal training at Samford University, and this effort was indeed recognized and rewarded by the partners of the firm.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father Nona and James White, sisters Cora Lawson and Bennie Jo Coffman, and brother Jack Laney. Survivors include brother Jim White, sisters-in-law Linda White and Thelma Laney, son Eric, daughter-in-law Erin, grandson Jackson, granddaughters Savannah and Charlotte, son Kevin, daughter-in-law Mimi, and grandson Nicholas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to any charity that strives to meet the needs of those who are unable to provide for themselves, the ill, or children.
The family will receive friends at John-Rideout’s Funeral Parlors from 11:00-1:00PM Tuesday August 6th.
