Sara Ann Polhemus

Sara Ann Polhemus died on March 10, 2021. She was a native of Birmingham, Alabama and most known for her contagious good humor and generosity. Sara Ann had a tremendous love of people and had friends from every walk of life.

For many years, she has been a vital leader in the work and projects of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS), having served in many positions. Sara has been Vice President and President of the Auxiliary, and was a tireless and successful fundraiser. Sara was a volunteer for Hand in Paw with her dog Samantha. She was crowned JazzCat Ball Queen for the GBHS and was also crowned Queen of Do-Da-Day. In 2018, the GBHS Auxiliary honored Sara Ann by presenting her with Mayor George G. Siebels Lifetime Achievement Award for service to and support of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.

Sara Ann was a member of the Globetrotters Supper Club and the Tuesday Night Girls. In earlier years she had served as Vice President of Hadassah at Temple Emanuel and was an active alumnus of Shades Valley High School.

Sara is survived by her husband and childhood sweetheart, William (Bill) Polhemus, and her only daughter, Ashley Fierman Lewis and husband Jon of Birmingham; her sister Cyndi Costello (Patrick) and her nephews Hunter (Kayla) and Kyle. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Amanda LeMay, and Mary Crain.

When Sara Ann and Bill married, Sara Ann embraced Bill's large family. She had her own extended family and entertained them all often. Her Dabney first cousins and their offspring made a large crowd and Sara Ann's friends loved to be with them at Sara Ann's and Bill's home.

Sara Ann was known for beautiful parties with a truly unique flair. She had been in the antiques and collectibles business over many years and was the long time owner of Sam's Place in Cahaba Heights and 18 Carats in Brookwood Mall.
