Sam is survived by his parents, Jimmy and Rita Ray of Alabaster, AL, his sisters Cathy Vance and her husband Jon of Helena, AL, and Julie Ray of Alabaster, AL. He is also survived by one nephew, Christopher Vance of Valdosta, GA. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Scott Ray.
Sam grew up in Charlotte, NC, Birmingham, AL, and Chicago, IL. He most recently resided in Birmingham. Sam enjoyed the outdoors, reading, and music. He was proudly a long-time stage and road manager along with sound technician for Earthbound, a Birmingham based band. He was known as “The Godfather” of Earthbound’s Earthfest, representing the group in their annual benefit for Black Warrior Riverkeeper. This event highlights the importance of Earth Day and the Black Water River watershed, which were both important causes to Sam. He was also passionate about bringing joy to others around him and is remembered by many as a big brother to everyone. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to Black Warrior Riverkeeper in Sam’s name, 712 37th Street S., Birmingham, AL 35222.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at Johns-Ridout’s Southside Chapel, 2116 University Blvd, Birmingham, Alabama, 35233 with a visitation one hour prior.
