Sam Anthony Pilato, age 90, passed away on September 6th, 2018 at the home of his granddaughter. He spent his final weeks surrounded by family and friends. Sam was born on March 10, 1928 in Birmingham, Alabama to Vincent Anthony Pilato and Mary Frances Puccio. He served in the Merchant Marines in his late teens, and then went on to own and run the Graymont Avenue Gulf station for 30 years. He was a devout Catholic and proud of his Sicilian heritage. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Joe, and his sister Sarah. He is survived by his children, Patricia (Steve) Nail, Mary Jo (Steve) Schreiner, Bernadette (John) Edens, Raphael (Art) Leach, and Vincent (Susan) Pilato; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Williams, Christy (Rodney) McAuley, Kimberly Nail, Amy Schreiner, Erika (Anthony) Freeman, Phillip Edens, Charlotte (Randy) Gay, Jessica Leach, Arthur Leach, Sam Pilato; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Crapet. The family would like to thank the wonderful people at Southeast Hospice for their care and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Visitation will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 11th at 10am, with a Funeral Mass at 11am, and a luncheon to follow in the Parish Hall. The burial will take place afterward at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
