Calm, sweet, nonjudgmental, full of love, without anything bad to say about anyone. Rochelle was born in Johnson City, Tennessee to Paul Elmer Crow and Sara Evans Crow. She lived most of her life in Birmingham. After graduating from Woodlawn High School, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Birmingham Southern and her Master’s degree from the University of Denver.
Rochelle began working for the UAB library in the late 60’s, when UAB was one building on 20th Street South and retired in 2002 from a great university. After retirement she began to volunteer at 55th Place, the Episcopal thrift store in Woodlawn, where she would organize and price donations.
She and her lifetime companion, Amanda, bred Maine Coon cats and showed them all over the country. Even after no longer showing cats, she continued to work for the welfare of animals. Her five feline companion will miss her greatly.
Rochelle loved to garden. Her home is surrounded by all kinds of wonderful plants and is a haven for a multitude of birds. She would often sit with her cup of tea and watch the birds in the garden. One of her fondest memories of her three trips to England were of Kew Gardens and the acres of Mountain Mist flowers blooming in March.
Another of her favorite things to do was reading. She especially enjoyed historical mysteries, histories, cook books, and gardening books. She was a member of the AAUW.
She joined St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in the 60’s and attended the Easter Service this year more than fifty years later. She was always ready to support all the missions of the church. She had a heart full of love and compassion for everyone.
She is survived by Amanda McCoy; her older brother and his family and her younger brother Evan (Nancy) and his family.
There will be a funeral service Friday, April 29th at 2pm in St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 1024 12th Street South with interment in the columbarium, followed by a reception in Trinity Commons at the church.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be given to the Birmingham Humane Society, the Community Kitchens at St. Andrew’s or to a charity of your choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.johnsridouts.com for the Crow family.
