A visitation for Oz will be held April 22, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235, followed by a funeral service, Dr. Gary Fisher officiating, from 11:00 AM to 12:00PM. Graveside service to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery 431 60th ST. N, Birmingham, AL 35212.
Oz graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1944, served his country in WWII in the US Army Air Force from 1944-1946 then attended Howard College, now Samford University before becoming a partner in his dad’s company, JH West and Sons. He retired in 1975, worked at AmSouth, now Regions Bank and retired in 1988.
He was a member of South Roebuck Baptist Church since 1956 where he served in many church positions. He is a Lifetime Deacon of his church.
Oz was preceded in death by his parents John H. and Claudia W. West, brother J. Alton Askew and sister Anita W. Chafin, his loving wife of over 63 years, Alberta (Bert) J. West, a wonderful and loving Godly woman and companion, and his loving wife Jean Irwin West whom God gave him as another Godly companion.
Oz is survived by his nephews Larry Chafin (Debra) and Eddie Powell (Melanie), his niece Janet C. Cox (Robert) and a number of great and great- great nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank Lipford Health Care for the excellent care Uncle Oz received from his sitters, especially Sandra Jackson who was with him for 4 years, and Kim Smith.
