Robert was a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Brother. He was preceded in death by his Sicilian immigrant parents, Mike and Sarah ( DiLeonardo ) Romano, his lovely wife, Concetta Tombrello Romano, along with his three older brothers, Anthony, Benny and Eugene.
Robert attended St. Aloysius grade school and graduated from Bessemer High School in 1948. He retired from the U.S. Post Office as a letter carrier after 35 years of service.
Robert was a decorated Korean War veteran. He was drafted into the military at the age of 20. He achieved the rank of sergeant with the 101st Airborne and Second Infantry Division as a medical aid. He was awarded several metals including two Bronze Stars for his heroic achievement and service for his combat in two major battles named Old Baldy and Pork Chop Hill. He later wrote and published a book about his military service on the front lines of the Korean War. Upon his return from Military Service, he married his wife of 64 years, Concetta Tombrello.
They had three sons, Michael ( Kathleen ), Milton and Mark ( Allison ). There are five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Robert coached youth and high school football for several years. As a football coach he assisted in coaching YMCA youth football,as well being the head coach of the 1967 St Paul’s 80/ 100 lb football team. He coached two years at John Carroll High School on the varsity and junior varsity teams.
Robert was a member of The Cathedral of Saint Paul where he served as an usher for many years. He loved oil painting as well. He enjoyed painting various types of landscapes.
Funeral services are Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Visitation is from 9am to 10am at The Cathedral of Saint Paul located at 2120 3rd Ave. North Birmingham ,Alabama. The funeral mass begins at 10am. Followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Refreshments will be served at The Cathedral of Saint Paul Fellowship Hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to The Cathedral of Saint Paul.
