Robert Jackson Marshall, Sr., a native of Birmingham and long –time resident of Mobile and Irvington, passed away at home with his loving family attendance on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014. He was 87 years old. He is survived by his beloved bride of 65 years, Joyce Lipsey Marshall, five children: Linda Marshall Hill (Jackson), Robert J. Marshall, Jr. (Teri Barrett), Elaine Marshall Burgener (Joe), Peggy Marshall Dekle (Tom), and Mary Marshall Dunn (Gary); 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; brother Frank Clifton (Jean) Marshall, and other family members. Mr. Marshall was a U.S. Army veteran who served as WWII was coming to a close, afterward attending Howard College in Birmingham. Throughout his long career in institutional food sales, he was admired for his professionalism and engaging personality by both colleagues and customers. Employed by Standard Brands, Inc., Dekle Foods, and Fruit Distributing Co., Mr. Marshall was formally honored for sales excellence and outstanding achievement. Bob was many things, including gifted athlete and avid golfer, sports fan, journaler, movie buff, student of human behavior, early sci-fi fan, historical commentator, and tireless follower of world events and social trends. For those closest to him, however, his outstanding role was a family man. R.J., as he was affectionately known by family members was ahead of his time in promoting equity and respect for all humans, regardless of race or social circumstance. Part of his legacy is his unique and artful use of humor to promote an unexpectedly deeper understanding of human nature. The family will continue to value and carry forth his pithy, unforgettable, and insightful sayings. We all have found strength in his message of human dignity in the face of fallibility. The family will receive friends at Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2014 from 11:00 Am to 1:00 PM. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice.
