Norton, Perry Ann Parker, was born January 1, 1930 in Hueytown, Alabama. She was the daughter of Nannie Maude Cheshire who preceded her in death. She was also the widow of Dr. John P. Oakes. Perry Ann was extremely proud of her family and loved them very much. She is survived by two daughters, Johnna Lou Oakes and Nanette Oakes Reid, son-in-law, Don A. Reid, granddaughter, Adrienne N. Whitehurst and grandson-in-law, Jason Whitehurst. She is also survived by her yorkie, Zeke, who was her faithful companion for many years.
As a child, Perry Ann was known for her dancing and singing. She fondly remembered her times at the Alabama Theatre as a performing member of the Mickey Mouse Club. In her later years, she enjoyed dancing again as a member of the "Retired and Lovin’ It" ballroom dance group and was its coordinator for several years. In 2006, she was named Volunteer of the Year by the Alabama Community Education Association for her work with this group.
Perry Ann attended Shelby County High School where she was one of the first majorettes. She also attended Howard College and was a member of the Acapella Choir. After her marriage to Dr. Oakes, they attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary together. Until Dr. Oakes’ death in 1964, she enjoyed being a pastor’s wife at various churches n Mississippi and Alabama. After his death, Perry Ann worked at various jobs before she became an Alfa Insurance secretary and then an insurance agent. She remained with Alfa for over 30 years until her retirement at the age of 70. She loved her job and considered it her “ministry”.
Even in the difficult circumstances of her illness over the last several years, she continued to smile and very seldom complained. Perry Ann’s smile will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Perry Ann was a member of McElwain Baptist Church and much appreciated Jody Baker and others who were so faithful to visit during her illness.
Visitation will be Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 11:30 AM until service time at 1 PM at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
