Peggy Dowdy Hester, age 84, of Birmingham went home to be with her Lord Thursday, February 1, 2018. Peggy made a profession of her belief in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior the first Sunday of 1957 at College Heights Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama. Peggy was a member of the Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama and taught Sunday school, Sunbeams, and Girls Auxiliary, sang in the choir, and was a member of Women’s Missionary Union for 15 years.
She was a retired dental hygienist and taught a 45 minute class on dental hygiene in every elementary school of Gadsden for The Alabama Bureau of Dental Hygiene. She was also President of the Gadsden City Council of PTA’s.
After moving to Grayson Valley in 1987, Peggy organized the Grayson Neighborhood Association with a neighborhood watch and also worked with the Alabama State Health Department to secure the West Nile Virus testing for Jefferson County in 2000. She also provided the music for her son’s nursing home ministry at 11 nursing homes in the Birmingham area for 15 years.
At her death, Peggy was an inactive member of Deerfoot Baptist Church having been inactive because of cancer.
Peggy is survived by her son Bradley K. Hester of Birmingham, Alabama; sister Carol D. Parker of Lithia Springs, Georgia; brother Doyce W. Dowdy of Gadsden, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews in Washington, D. C., Gadsden, AL, Hayden, AL, Atlanta, GA, South Carolina, and Florida.
Visitation will be Sunday, February 4, 2018 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel with a graveside service to follow at 3:00 pm at Jefferson Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
