POWERS, PROFESSOR OLLIE SYLVESTER III peacefully passed away at home on December 3, 2012. A graduate of Woodlawn High School, he received his B.S. degree in accounting from Samford University and his M.A. degree in accounting from the University of Alabama. Professor Powers had an extremely successful career at UAB School of Business since 1971, both in teaching and administration. His zest for teaching and dedication enabled him to influence two generations of accounting students, many of them children of former students. Professor Powers is recognized as one of the truly outstanding classroom teachers within the School of Business. He received every teaching award for which UAB faculty are eligible, including the University's most prestigious award, the Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. He was the first School of Business recipient of the UAB President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and was twice honored with the Loudell Ellis Robinson Teaching Excellence Award. The Alabama Society of CPAs honored Professor Powers with its S. Paul Garner Outstanding Educator Award. His dedication to his students is evident by the many lives that he influenced in his 40 years at UAB School of Business both, professionally, but more importantly, personally. Professor Powers is survived by his brother, David Powers; sister-in-law, Sherry Powers; nieces, Ashley and Heather Powers. Professor Powers will be greatly missed by his family and many friends and colleagues. Visitation will be December 6, 2012 at Avondale United Methodist Church at 11:30am with the Funeral service to follow at 1:30pm. Following the funeral, there will be a private burial for family only. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the UAB School of Business: Ollie S. Powers Endowed Scholarship in Accounting.
