Michael "Mike" Eric Smith passed away on August 28, 2023 at age 56 in Niceville, Florida. Mike was born on December 10, 1966 in Birmingham, Alabama to Jan Erikson and Donald Smith. Mike was a lifelong and avid Alabama football fan.
Mike had earned his Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice as well as his Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration. He worked for the Huntsville Police Department for 19 years, leaving in 2005. He then worked for the State of Florida Department of Health as a Medical Malpractice Investigator for 10 years. At the time of his passing, Mike was working at the main branch of Eglin Federal Credit Union.
Mike is preceded in death by his sisters Yancy Merrit, Diane Smith, and Rachel Goodloe, his brothers David Smith and Matthew Smith, and his step-mother Sandra Smith. Mike is lovingly survived by his wife Elizabeth "Beth" Smith, son Derek Smith, step-daughter Lacy (Gerald) Taylor, step-son Wesley (Joy) Taylor, grandchildren, Quentin, Kamren, Bentley, Karmello, Kinzley, and Weston, parents Jan Erikson and Donald (Margo) Smith, sisters Donna Smith, Staci (Mark) Micheletti, and Kelli Nichols, brother Danny Lucio, and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Mike will be held Thursday, September 7, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Johns-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel. A celebration of life will occur Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 2:00 PM. Mike will be laid to rest at Birmingham's historic Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Mike to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Fund.
