Maurice Pettus Sr, was born September 11, 1946, in Birmingham, AL. He was the son of Edward “Buster” Pettus and Chistine Davis Pettus and brother to Sharon Henry. He graduated Western Olin High School in 1964 and matriculated to the United States Army where he served for a number of years. After returning home from active duty he married, and to that union three children were born. Later in life he married his present wife, Elaine Griffin Pettus. He was employed with CSX Railroad until his retirement in October 2006. He loved fishing, Auburn football, playing cards and his collection of trains. He dedicated his life as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on April 18, 2021. He has since maintained a zealous spirit for the ministry, being an encouragement to others. On Sunday April 14, 2024, fell asleep in death. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings: William Pettus, Claudette Harris, Annie Lee Peterson, James Pettus, Curtis Stevenson, and Cheryl Stevenson.
He leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife Elaine Griffin Pettus, children: Maurice Pettus, Jr. (Alfredia), Tony Pettus (Jennifer), Tonya Hurst (Earl) and Corey Cowan (Rinsie). Grandchildren: Brandon Pettus (Morgan), Brooke Hurst, Bridgette Hurst, Ayanna Pettus, Keyara Pettus, Chornithea Cowan, Caleb Cowan, Chloe Cowan. Stepchildren: Jenae Germain and Terence Staples (Alexus), step grandchild Juliet Germain, numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at Elmwood Chapel Funeral home from 3pm until 5pm. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 11 am at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1661 Hickory Rd SW, Bessemer, AL 35022. He will be laid to rest at 12:45 at Elmwood Cemetery. All graveside attendees are requested to meet at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home, 800 Dennison Ave. SW, Birmingham, AL 35211, to process to the graveside.
