Mary Lee Pitts, Age 78, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2020 due to ongoing health issues. She was born November 7, 1942 in Union Springs, Alabama where she was raised by her grandparents, Abe Calhoun and Mattie C. Hardy.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of several churches in her life: Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, South Part Missionary Church and Zion Spring Baptist Church. Mary grew up in the Bullock County, where she received her primary education and later graduated from Herzing Institute.
Mary loved to love on people. She loved reading her favorite book of the Bible, "John". She was known for her story telling and they were all very humorous. She also shared her love with food, especially fried fish and sweet potato pie.
For many years, Mary worked at The Children's Hospital of Birmingham as a Unit Secretary. She said she worked there because she loved sharing her motherly love to other children besides her own. Her special words she lived by were" Be kind and help others. The world could always use one kinder person. And if you can take it one step further in remembrance of me, please do something kind for the elderly".
Her life was a living example of the Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32-"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
Left to carry on her legacy are eight children, Patricia T. Parker, Anglish L. Taylor, James B. Taylor (Tyeast), Ella L. Pitts, L Lee Pitts Jr., Kelvin W. Pitts (Rosalba), Mary A. Jones (Reginald) and Kim D. Player (Michael). Also, her 23 grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She also leaves behind three sisters, Elizabeth M. Daniels, Bobbie D. Perkins and Mattie M. Glover.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents and her mother, Minnie Calhoun as well as her brothers, Clarence Harris and Bridge Johnson.
A public visitation will be held on Monday, December 28, 2020 from 4-5pm in the chapel of John Ridout's Elmwood Chapel located at 800 Dennison Ave. SW Birmingham, Al. 35211. There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 11:00am at Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. Reginald Duff will be officiating. John Ridout's Elmwood Chapel directing.
