Marilyn McWhorter Rein passed away on November 15, 2022 at UAB Highlands hospital of renal failure. She was born on April 18, 1942 in Birmingham to Gordon and Martha Pope McWhorter and, with her brothers Steve, Don and the late Doug, grew up in Chattanooga and Trussville. She graduated in 1960 from Hewitt-Trussville High School and in 1964 from Samford University (then Howard College). She went on to earn a MA in Latin American Studies from Tulane University in New Orleans, where she met her husband Charlie. They married on September 2, 1967 in New Orleans and welcomed twin daughters Elizabeth Suzanne (Betsy) and Ellen Katherine two years later, and a son, Christopher Michael the following year. They lived first in Panama City, Florida and later in Pearl River, Louisiana, where she worked for a time as a librarian at St. Margaret Mary Catholic School. She was active in a number of civic organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution. After Charlie’s death in 1991, she relocated briefly to Tullahoma, Tennessee and then to Abita Springs, Louisiana in 2000 to be near her first granddaughter, Camille Pierce. In 2019 she returned to her native Birmingham to be close to her other four granddaughters, Krista, Madeleine, Alexandra, and Jocelyn Rein. She was a devoted Christian, an avid reader, a global traveler, a political junkie, and a lifelong Democrat who displayed unceasing kindness and generosity. She will be missed by her extended family, including her cousins and many nieces and nephews. It was her final wish to have her ashes scattered in some of her favorite places, including in Pelham with her forebears, at the beach at Panama City, and across the emerald fields of her ancestors’ Ireland.
