Marie Leon was born on January 6, 1932, the fourth child born to her proud parents, Phillip Joseph Leon and Frances Lovoy Leon in Birmingham, Alabama. She joined her three older siblings, Sam, Joseph and Lawrence. She was educated in the Birmingham City Schools System and graduated from Ensley High School in 1950. She worked at Liberty National Insurance Company as a Data Entry - Key Punch Clerk, this was during a time when computers were just coming into existence. She worked in that position for over forty plus years. Marie never married but she was very proud to be the aunt of her nine nieces and nephews. Later in life she moved into the position of being the Matriarch of the family.
Marie was a sweet, kind, generous and loving person who loved people, life and living. She prided herself as being one who never met a stranger. She loved to greet people in her home and would not allow anyone to leave her without offering them a drink or a sweet pastry. Being hospitable was key to her being Marie.
Marie enjoyed shopping and looking good. Shopping for BOGO”s at Publix was a favorite thing to do, not only did she buy one item, but five or more of the same at one time. She enjoyed the casino, going to the beach, and watching television, especially, the Young and the Restless and Alabama football. She did not cook, but she enjoyed eating, especially, corn casserole, taco pie, spicy chicken and Doritos. The spicier the food, the more she enjoyed it.
Marie was a woman of great faith, a Prayer Warrior. She had a great devotion to Mary and loved praying the Rosary. When visiting her, one would notice the rosary beads wrapped around her hands. The Rosary was a source of comfort for her, especially during her last days. She loved attending Mass when she could, and when she couldn’t her television was always on EWTN. In addition to her devotion to Mary, she had devotions to Saint Joseph, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Lucy; especially Saint Lucy, when her grandnephew, Justin injured his eye. Looking through her home, you could find many statues of the Sacred Heart.
God called Marie Leon home at the age of 93, at her home on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at her home in Hoover, Alabama. She was predeceased by her parents, Phillip Joseph and Frances Lovoy Leon, her siblings, Sam Marino and his wife Gertrude, Joseph Phillip Leon and his wife Teresa, and Lawerence Leon.
