Margaret Self

Margaret Roseanne Thomas Self passed away on the evening of July 7, 2023. Margaret was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 8, 1936, the oldest of nine children. She is survived by Calvin, her loving husband of 70 years (August 14th). She is also survived by her siblings: Kathleen, Norma, Blanche, Lonnie, and Linda. Margaret is also survived by her son, Marshall "Marty" (Jackie), daughter-in-law, Darlene, grandchildren Sarah Self Hulcy and Carrie Self, great grandchildren Owen Hulcy, Lily Hulcy, Brooklyn Hulcy, and Kyleigh Self. She was preceded in death by siblings Ronnie, Donnie, and Patricia, by her son, Steven, and by her grandsons Jeff Self and Kevin Self.

Margaret was not only a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she was a woman of many talents. She was a cake decorator who loved making cookies for friends and family at Christmas and an avid gardener who loved flowers. Her work included being a school bus driver, helping in the building of above ground pools, working on the construction of several homes, as well as working as a secretary and church camp cook. Margaret was never afraid of hard work or callused hands.

Margaret was a dedicated Christian. She was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Pinson for more than 35 years. She was known for her beautiful flower arrangements, her faithful service as the church clerk, nursery worker, and she never failed to volunteer for any project that needed to be done.

Calvin and Margaret enjoyed traveling together all over the world. From European cruises to riding camels in Egypt to visiting 48 of the 50 states, their lives were enriched by their many adventures

Margaret's legacy of love and service will live on in our hearts.

A visitation for Margaret will be held Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, Alabama 35235. A funeral service will follow beginning at 11:00 AM in the chapel.
