Margaret was the fourth and youngest daughter of Judge Hugh A. Locke and Mabel Plosser Locke. Born on November 5, 1933, she attended Ramsay High School -1950-, and then graduated from The University of Alabama in 1954 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
After college Margaret returned to Birmingham, where she worked for Hayes Aircraft Corporation, creating detailed engineering specification sheets and drawing the resulting products. After moving on from Hayes, she found her dream job as an interior designer at Beacon House, a Homewood-based designer and furniture retailer.
Margaret married John Robert (Bob) Fleenor, her husband of 37 years, on May 21 1966. Later she became an active member at Independent Presbyterian Church, where she served as guild member. Most notably, she hosted many Christian Study groups at her home for women and children of her community.
Margaret was also an avid painter. She was a member of a group of local painters who traveled both regionally and internationally in search of new venues to create paintings. Her grace, kindness and colorful spirit come through in all of her artwork.
In addition, Margaret sat on the advisory board of the Birmingham School of Law, which her father founded in 1915. She was a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, the Lilies of the Valley Garden Club, and the Birmingham Country Club. She cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren, visiting Lake Martin, making an annual trip to the beach, as well as the occasional trip to the Cotswolds, England.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert (Bob) Fleenor, her two older brothers, Hugh A. Locke, Jr. and Louis Plosser Locke, and her parents. She is survived by her sister Mabel Locke Donaldson and two sons, John Robert Fleenor, Jr., David Allen Fleenor (Laura), and her two grandchildren, Mabel Anne Fleenor and Henry David Fleenor, as well as her nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful to Sharon Forrest, Mary Stallworth, Eleanor Hill, Barbara Green, and all of the other friends and caregivers who treated her like family, allowing Margaret to remain in her home during her final days.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 18, 2024, 3 p.m., at Independent Presbyterian Church, following a private family ceremony. Memorials can be sent to Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue S. Birmingham, AL. 35205.
