Kathleen H. Cole, age 97, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Kathleen was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 4, 1925. She is preceded in death by her parents: Harry Morris Clabaugh Hewson, Sr. and Kathleen Hewson. She is also preceded in death by her brother Harry Morris Clabaugh Hewson, Jr., and loving husband of 24 years William Long Cole. Kathleen is survived by her two children and their spouses, William "Bebo" Long Cole, Jr.(Katherine) and her daughter Julia Cole Farmer(Marshall), four grandchildren, Mary Henderson Cole Webb(Davis), William Walker Cole(Meg), Sarah Katherine Cole Woodhull(Alec), Eleanor Grace Farmer, and great-grandchild: William Kenneth Woodhull, as well as three nieces.
Kathleen graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1948, and went on to complete a Masters of Science in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati. She spent 20 years as a research Chemist at Southern Research Institute where her primary focus was cancer research . She was a devoted and long time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Altar Guild, and a volunteer receptionist. In the community, she delivered Meals On Wheels for 10 years, served as President of the Claxton Club, and was sought out for her impeccable organizational skills. As a longtime resident of Colonial Hills in Mountain Brook, she personally attended to the needs of two elderly widows without any close relatives. In 2007, Kathleen moved to St. Martin's in the Pines where she served as Resident President and Elder in the St. Martin's Cottages Community. Known for her dry wit and humor, Kathleen will be greatly missed by her family.
Kathleen's family extends a special gratitude to her caregivers in her final days: Kathy Snipe, Sheila Wisenant,Tasha Head and Regis Price. Visitation for family and friends will be held on December 15, 2023 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 2:00PM. A burial service is to follow at 3:00PM.
