John Barton Long. Feb. 1, 1949 – Dec. 4, 2022 John Barton Long (Barton) went to be with the Lord after dying peacefully at home surrounded by family on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife of over 52 years, Polly Pratt Long, daughter, Laura Fulton, daughter-in-law and son, Jessica and John B Long Jr., grandchildren, Isabella and Amelia Fulton, Tripp and Simms Long, brothers, Tommy and Colvin Long, and sister, Julia Speights. Barton earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Samford University in 1971 where he played football and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Barton went on to start a carpet and upholstery cleaning company. He soon discovered a love for designing and building his own equipment which lead him to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, Barton began a rewarding career at Fluid Power Systems which was unfortunately cut short with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis that proved to be aggressive. He and his wife, Polly are members of Third Presbyterian Church, and Barton was also a member of men’s Community Bible Study. A memorial service will be held at Third Presbyterian on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2:00 p.m. CT followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, and Third Presbyterian Church 617 22nd Street South, Birmingham, AL 35233.
