Dr. John Alex Floyd Jr. of Trussville passed away on February 7, 2021 surrounded by his family. A native of Selma, AL John’s love for horticulture was cultivated from a young age. He is preceded in death by his parents, Louise and John Alex Floyd Sr. John is an alumni of Auburn University where earned the Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and also Clemson University where he earned his doctoral degree of Plant Physiology. John was also the recipient of an honorary PhD in Humanities from Furman University.
John was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Pam, and sons Ryan (wife Samantha) and Alex (wife Michelle), his sister Deborah Floyd, as well as his grandchildren Wells, Emory and James Finley.
Christ, community and philanthropy were the center of his life. John was a devoted member of Huffman United Methodist Church where he volunteered weekly and served in multiple positions for over 30 years. His time and knowledge were not limited to his church. His philanthropic contributions to the community also included volunteering with The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, as well as the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. John served on the Trussville School Board in various capacities including being the one time President contributing to the founding and growth of the Trussville School system.
The former Vice President and Editor in Chief of Southern Living was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to so many. Birmingham and the South in general are better places because of John Floyd and his many contributions. Due to the current pandemic, burial services will be held privately with an open memorial service at a later date. John’s larger than life presence will be missed by so many and celebrated at a safer time. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the John Floyd Memorial Fund at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and/or Huffman United Methodist Church.
