Jesse O. Weatherly, Jr. was born on July 3, 1930 and passed away on August 19, 2019. While Jesse spent the last few years of his life in Cullman, AL Assisted Living facilities, he was born and raised and lived the vast majority of his life in Birmingham, AL. Jesse was born to Jesse O. Weatherly, Sr. and Velma Weeks Weatherly. During his early years he lived in the Norwood and Homewood communities within Birmingham. Jesse attended Shades Cahaba High School, from which he graduated in 1948. He then attended the University of Alabama, from which he received a B.S. Degree in Commerce and Business in 1952. He then served in the Korean War for sixteen months as a First Lieutenant, and was honorably discharged in March 1954. While serving in the Korean War, he managed to correspond almost daily with his sweetheart Emma Sue Montgomery. Jesse and Sue were engaged shortly after Jesse returned from Korea, and were married on November 19, 1955 at First Baptist Church in downtown Birmingham. Jesse and Sue began their life together in Birmingham, and Jesse was working with his father (Jesse Weatherly, Sr.); assisting with the operation of restaurants for several years. Then in 1961 Jesse established Weatherly Retail Foods, and became the owner/operator of several restaurants; including the Pasquales Pizza charter franchise location (near the Ritz Theater in downtown Birmingham) and the El Burrito Mexican Restaurant (on Hollywood Boulevard overlooking the Red Mountain Expressway). For most of their married life, Jesse and Sue were faithful members of Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Most importantly, Jesse placed his faith in the grace and mercy and saving work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesse was a relatively quiet person, and served in the shadows rather than the limelight. But his compassionate heart and giving spirit touched the lives of many – some known and many complete strangers. The most consistent words used to describe Jesse by others were “kindness” and “humility” and “loyalty”. Jesse was a faithful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was particularly engaged in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He became known as “D-Daddy” by his grandchildren, which quickly morphed into the name by which he was called by all family members. He was ever present at ball practices, sporting events, graduation ceremonies, and anything important to the people he loved. Jesse loved Alabama football, and was a season ticket holder for over twenty years. He enjoyed attending as many games as possible; and was known to bite a fingernail or two during close games. Jesse is proceeded in death by his mother (Velma Weeks Weatherly); father (Jesse O. Weatherly, Sr.), and wife (Sue Montgomery Weatherly). He is survived by his sister Joyce Weatherly Sington; son Jesse “Jay” O. Weatherly III (Sharon), daughter Susan Weatherly Coefield (Tim), and daughter Sally Ann Weatherly; grandchildren Hunter Weatherly (Ashlee), Caroline Weatherly, and Austen Weatherly (Bradley); and great grand-children Steele and Hallie. A Celebration service for Jesse will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Briarwood Presbyterian Church Chapel; reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: The Foundry Ministries PO Box 36 Cullman, AL 35056 (Memo: Andy Black/Don Sanders Memorial Dormitory) Finally, special thanks to caregiver Grace Eidson; as well as the staff at Morningside Assisted Living, Westminster Assisted Living, and Hanceville Nursing and Rehab Center.
