Jesse Bhurrel Hampton was born on June 7, 1935 in Lineville, Alabama to Grover Cyphas Hampton and Ara Belle Scarborough Hampton. He graduated from Clay County High School in 1953. After graduation he moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he was employed by Long-Lewis Hardware Co. Shortly after coming to Birmingham he met, fell in love with and married Betty Childers on April 28, 1955. Bhurrel enlisted in the US Army Reserves in 1958. In 1960 his unit was called to active duty. He was honorably discharged in 1964.
Bhurrel always loved to drive any kind of vehicle. After his time in the service he pursued a carreer as a freight truck driver. While living in Fort Myers, Florida he was exposed to the shrimping industry. After some time he decided to try his hand as a shrimp boat owner and captain. After a few years of strenuous work with varying degrees of success he decided that driving a truck provided a greater opportunity for him so he returned to his first love.
He remained active in this industry until his retirement in the early 2000 teens. He then bought an RV Trailer so he and Betty could do some traveling until Betty's untimely death in 2017. After the death of his wife he lost interest in traveling and sold all his equipment.
Though he and Betty had no children Bhurrel was always big on family. He never missed a chance to have family gatherings with his siblings and their offspring and on occasion including aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. It seemed the larger the crowd the happier he was.
For many years Bhurrel suffered from some serious ailments including atrial fibrillation (A-Fib) and loss of cartlidge in his knees to the extent that his knees were bone on bone. As time passed, other ailments became troublesome. Kidney failure, circulatory blockages and heart valve failure were diagnosed. Though all these issues may have slowed him down a notch they were far from stopping him, until recently.
When He realized that he was no longer able to maintain his home he sold it and moved into an independent living apartment at Fair Haven. As his condition worsened, he became more dependent on those around him. Due to his independent nature this bothered him tremendously. During his time at Fair Haven Bhurrel became friends with many of the other residents there. He had a very close friendship with Marjorie Alvis. The family is most grateful to her for the brightness she brought into his life in his latter days.
Somewhere along his road in this life he came to know his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For this we are all so very thankful to God. We will miss his tender and loving prayers at our Family functions
Dear brother, you will be sorely missed. Until we meet again, fare-thee-well!
