McCurdy, Jean Elizabeth McLean, "Mamajean," died peacefully at her home on Saturday, November 19th, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. Mamajean was born February 22, 1922, to the late L. C. McLean, Sr. and Ann M. McLean, in Pratt City. She graduated from Ensley High School and was a member of Pratt City Presbyterian Church. Inspired as a young woman by visiting missionaries, she began studies at Birmingham Southern College to become a missionary in South America. However, God had a different mission prepared for her as she met and married Roscoe A. McCurdy and raised four children. They moved to Bluff Park in 1960, where she taught Sunday School at Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church for many, many years. She was an avid reader throughout her life, usually enjoying several books each week, and was very involved with the Friends of the Hoover Library. She was the first and only employee of the Hoover Chamber of Commerce for several years after it was formed in 1978, and was the secretary there until her retirement in 2001. She was a knowledgeable historian of the city of Hoover and February 22, 1997, was declared Jean McCurdy Day for the entire city by then Mayor Frank Skinner. Her greatest pleasures were loving her family, serving her church, and cheering for the University of Alabama. Mamajean was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Roscoe; two brothers: Sidney L. McLean, Sr. and Gilbert W. McLean and sister-in-law Clara McLean. Left here to cherish their memories of her are her brother, L. C. McLean, Jr., (Sammye); her sister-in-law Ruth McLean; her four children: John F. McCurdy (Jane), Richard H. McCurdy (Deb), Daniel C. McCurdy (Sabra), and Claudia M. Ball (Jerry); grandchildren: Richard McCurdy, Daniel McCurdy (Elise), Natalie Sherman (Jack), David Cherry (Autumn), Brandon Hearn, Jessica Kupfer and Jenna McCurdy. She was adored by her great-grandchildren: Alysa and Charles Kupfer, Will and Rett McCurdy, John Thomas Hill, and Elle, Mae Caroline, and Clayton Cherry. She had many nieces and nephews who all contributed greatly to her love of family. Her love expanded her family to include many dear friends and especially her “adopted” grandsons Calvin and DeWayne Harvey. Services will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Ridout's Elmwood Chapel at 11:00am, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to either Children's Harbor or Friends of the Hoover Library.
