James was the best husband, dad, grandad, and much more to so many people. While it is hard to think about not having him here with us, it is a very peaceful feeling knowing that his mind is sharp as a tack and he is with Jesus looking over all of us with the love of his life, Janie. James attended Woodlawn High School and was a lifelong member of the Warbler’s Men Singing Group. He was a long-time active member of Huffman United Methodist Church and Loyalty Sunday School Class. He was a Free Mason and Shriner Scottish Rights member and regularly donated to Scottish Rite Hospital and Shriner’s Hospital children’s fund as well as other charities and organizations.
James was a simple man, but he was pure light and laughter. He was a joyful and delightful presence to those lucky enough to know him. He worked his entire life, from high school through retirement, as a conductor on the BNSF Railroad. His work ethic was unrivaled and he enjoyed providing for his family. He loved sports, especially Alabama Football. He was very proud that his son played for the Bear! He was proud of his family and he loved them.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Janie Sue Whitman; his parents, Floyd H. and Opal Whitman; his sisters, Barbara Ann Glenn and Billie Ruth Childress. He is survived by his most beloved children, that made him so proud, Steven K. Whitman (Cheril) of Atlanta, GA, Michele Whitman Lacey (Bill) of Atlanta, GA, and Stephanie Whitman Bowers (David) of Birmingham, AL; his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Morgan W. Lacey and Mallory E. Savage of Atlanta, GA, Dallas Whitman and Karsyn Whitman of Atlanta, GA, Bentley Bowers, Bailey Bowers and Brody Bowers of Hoover, AL; three great-grandchildren, Gunner Jack Whitman, James William Savage, and Jack Whitman Savage, of Atlanta, GA and many nieces and nephews along with other relatives.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel from 1-2 PM. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital or the Shriner’s Hospital Children’s Fund, or Huffman United Methodist Church Loyalty Sunday School Class.
