It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of James after a lengthy illness. He is predeceased by one sister, Deborah. James leaves two children, Kischa Johnson of Birmingham, Alabama and Darius Smith, of Madison, Alabama; two grand children, Dylan and Daryn Smith; four siblings: three sisters, Phyllis Delk, Cynthia Owens, and Vanessa Bivens all of Birmingham, Alabama and one brother, Anthony Johnson of Chicago, IL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
James was one of the Foot Soldiers during the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s in Birmingham. He was a hard worker, and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. He was very funny and was always the life of the party. He was loved by everyone who knew him. James loved music and traveling.
There will be a private interment at Elmwood Cemetery. To ensure the health and safety of all there will be a planned celebration of his life for family and friends at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made in his name to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute or Alzheimer's of Central Alabama.
