James D. Smith, Jr. passed away on July 14, 2020. He was born on March 8, 1944 in Birmingham, AL to James Drayton Smith, Sr. and Vernzola McCarley Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his sons, James Drayton Smith, III (Mallory) and Charles Benjamin Smith (Ginny); grandchildren, Tucker Drayton Smith, Mary Elizabeth Smith, Tanner Blaine Smith, Charles Benjamin Smith, Jr., Stanford Wood Smith, and Gunner Huckleberry Smith; former wife, Sharon Scarbrough Smith; sister Deborah Smith Fulford; and niece Smith Fulford Sherrer (Matt).
Jim attended Shades Valley High School, Auburn University (Delta Chi Fraternity), and UAB School of Dentistry (Class of 1984). He enjoyed his patients and the practice of dentistry for 33 years in the Inverness area. Jim loved the beach, his automobiles, and watching his grand kids grow up. He loved people and interacting with his countless friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 17, 2020 at 10am at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home. A celebration of Jim's life will follow in the chapel at 11am. Due to the ordinance from Jefferson County, facemasks are required; as well as safe social distancing.
