Jim, also known as Sonny, served his country valiantly as a decorated Sergeant, operating with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam and 7th Army Division in Germany from 1969 through 1971.
Jim’s passion was flying; he shared his enthusiasm with everyone he met and particularly his grandson. He served the Bessemer Airport Authority Board in the positions of Treasurer, Vice-Chairman, and most recently Chairmen. Jim was also an active member of the Bessemer Pilots Association, the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, and the General Aviation Alliance of Alabama. In addition, Jim was a member of the Dixie Division of the Military Vehicle Collections Association.
Throughout his life, Jim was an entrepreneur. He established and managed several businesses focused on telecommunications, touching many lives through his coaching and support.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Nancy Johnson; Daughter Jill Ritchey (Albert); Daughter Mindy Dill (Jeremy); and Grandson Aidan Ritchey all of Birmingham, AL. He is also survived by Brother James Jones (Donna); Sister Nan Elliot; Brother Bobby Jones; Sister Diane Cowart (Billy); and Sister Jeannette Swain (Bill). His sister, Ann Gates, preceded Jim in death.
His Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 27, 2023 at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Support Committee for the Alabama National Cemetery.
