Jack Lee Bailey, 95, of Pinson, passed away Friday, Sept. 11. He was born in Jefferson County on Dec. 4, 1919, the fourth of 12 children born to Gus and Mima McDanal Bailey. Mr. Bailey grew up in Tarrant and attended Jefferson County High School. He worked in the construction trade and during World War II served in the Army Air Corps in Australia and the Philippines. After the war Mr. Bailey worked in gas pipeline construction and in the early 1950s joined Southern Natural Gas Co. where he worked for more than 30 years. After a number of years operating heavy equipment at pipeline construction sites, Mr. Bailey was appointed superintendent of Southern Natural's warehouse operation, a position that he held until his retirement in the 1980s. Mr. Bailey was an elder at Pinson Presbyterian Church for a number of years, and later became a member of Trussville's Cahaba Springs Presbyterian Church. Fishing, water sports, camping, travel, vegetable gardening and spending time with his grandchildren were among Mr. Bailey's favorite activities. Survivors are his wife of 73 years, Lillian B. Bailey; two sons, Thomas E. (Jan) and Dale S.; five grandchildren, Patrick Bailey, Nathan Bailey (Shawna) and Danielle McBrayer (Josh); Drew Bailey (Natalie) and Olivia Ficken (Adam), and six great grandchildren; two sisters, Jessie Smith and Margaret Swann. Mr. Bailey was predeceased by a son, James Lee Bailey. Funeral will be at Ridout's Trussville Chapel. Date and time are pending. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens (East).
