Ila Harper Ingle went home to be with her Lord, peacefully, on April 12, 2023, at the age of 90, at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Nauvoo, Alabama, she lived most of her life in Birmingham. A graduate of Carbon Hill High School class of 1951, Ila married Dwight “Bud” Ingle in 1952. After all four children were born, she made the remarkable decision to pursue higher education at The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, graduating with both a Bachelor of Science followed by a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. As a student, she was inducted into the Honor Society Phi Beta Kappa. Her love for teaching and education led to further studies beyond the Masters degree at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, where she received an AA in Education. Ila began her career teaching 2nd Grade for three years, followed by 33 years at Tarrant Middle School teaching 7th Grade Math and Computer Science.
A devout Christian, Ila loved attending and leading Bible studies, and she was a member of Hillview Baptist Church for over 50 years. As a child, she spent weekends attending Sacred Harp singings with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight “Bud” Ingle, her parents Annie and Tom Harper, and her brother Reuben Harper (Juanita). She is survived by her four children Dwight Ingle, Dr Gary Ingle (Janet), Karen Ingle Wiggins, and David Ingle (Lelia); her seven grandchildren Brandon Ingle, Allison Ingle Farmer (Tony), Amanda Ingle Peppers (Chad), Rebecca Wiggins Phillips (Drew), Michael Wiggins, Nicholas Ingle, and Joshua Ingle; and her four great-grandchildren Mackenzie Farmer, Brady Farmer, Easton Peppers, and Rylee Peppers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Ila Ingle be made to South Highland Center Adult Day Care, 2035 Highland Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35255.
The family expresses their deepest gratitude and thanks to the South Highland Center staff for its outstanding and devoted care of our beloved Mother and Grandmother for over five years.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023 at Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., followed the next day by the funeral service at Elmwood Chapel on Tuesday April 18, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
