Hyman Maurice Levine Jr.

Apr. 27, 1927 - Aug. 21, 2015 Mr. Levine, age 87 passed away on August 21, 2015. He is survived by wife of 46 years Mary Rosalee Levine; son and best friend Maury; was called Grampy by Mary, Sophie, and Rian; brother in law Dr. Morris Levy (Rita); nephew Dr. Robert Levy, of Arkansas; David Levy (Nikki) of Mobile; niece Liz Reichman (Itzak) of San Antonio; and dear cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents H. M. Levine, Sr. and Carrie Crine Levine and his sister Bootsie Levine. He grew up in Birmingham where he attended Ramsey High School and University of Alabama. He met his wife while working at University Hospital where they were both Patient Unit Managers. He retired from Medical Center East where he was Director of Wellness and Health Promotions and his office was at Eastwood Mall. For one promotion, he milked a cow in the middle of the mall. He was very active in community and volunteer work. He was President of the Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation Board twice, a nominee for Vestavia Hills Citizen of the Year Award twice, inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizens Hall of Fame, charter member of the Birmingham Track Club, President of Temple Emaun-El Brotherhood, a 1996 Olympic Torch Runner for his volunteer work, representative to Jewish Children's Regional Service, founding member of the Mid Alabama Republican Club, recipient of the Tekum Olam award, Vice President of the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce, and a board member of the Jefferson County American Cancer Society. He loved spending time with his granddaughters, particularly when they put a pink wig on his head. He also spent time at the J where he would hang out with "the wise men and the sages," where he said that you could only believe half of the stories. Cantor Jessica Roskin will conduct the service which will be held at John's Ridouts - Elmwood on Monday, August 24. Visitation will be at 12:00 and the service at 1:00. In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Emanu-El or Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest.
