Preceded in death by her husband, of 71 years, Vernon E. Miller, and her parents, brother and sister-in-law Allan and Lorraine Bjordal, her brother Jon Bjordal of Centerville, SD., sister and brother-in-law Dorrit and Warren Reeves, and sister and brother-in-law Marjie and Leonard Lindsey of Adel, GA.
She is survived by her children: Richard and Juanita Miller of Las Cruces, NM;, Randy and Cindy Miller of Birmingham, AL; Joan Miller (Conrad Haden) of Austin, TX; grandson, Benjamin Miller (Katy Fulton) of Muscatine, IA; brother, Ben Bjordal; sister-in-law, Diane Bjordal of Centerville, SD;, numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and several cousins in Norway and the United States, and bonus children, Carol and Carl Sosnin.
Helen was educated in the public schools of South Dakota through 1948, when she received her junior college degree from South Dakota State University at Brookings, SD. In 1948 she married Vernon Miller of Comfrey, MN. She lived in several different states where her husband worked as editor of small-town newspapers and she worked as a legal secretary. In 1955 they moved to Birmingham, AL where her husband was employed with Progressive Farmer magazine. Helen went back to school to get her bachelor’s degree and Alabama teacher’s certificate. She received her bachelor’s degree from Samford University in 1967 and her master’s degree in mathematics in 1972. She taught mathematics at John Carroll High School, Jefferson State Community College and Samford University, retiring in 1994.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, Alabama 35213. A memorial service will also be held at a later date in Centerville, South Dakota. Information will be provided at a later date.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Centerville Public Library, 421 Florida Street, Centerville, SD 57014.
