Gloria passed away to heaven peacefully at her Hoover, Alabama, home of 63 years, at the age of 94. Gloria was born January 29,1928, in the community of Raimund, Alabama, where she spent many happy childhood years. A graduate of Jones Valley High School, she was employed at Lloyd Noland Hospital until she married her sweetheart, Carl August Schaefer, Sr., in 1953. Early in life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and continued her church work at Powderly Baptist Church. Later at St. John's Evangelical Church she taught for many years in the primary department teaching her own and many other children about the love of Jesus. She always found joy in being around children. Those who knew Gloria were aware of her strong faith, love for family, work ethic, fondness for going on drives and rides through the countryside, working in her garden, playing the piano, love for the game of golf, and her joy in sharing her delicious homemade lemon pound cake. She happily served on the council and as President of the Green Valley (Hoover) Country Club Ladies Golf Association working to promote the game of golf for women. She also served the community as a Girl Scout troop leader. She had a generous spirit and was happiest when giving to others. She will be greatly missed by all.
Gloria is preceded in death by her husband, Carl August Schaefer, Sr.; her father, Pearl Edward Steele, and mother, Lula Mae Edwards Steele; her sisters, Janet Ophelia Steele, Dorothy Ray (Montee), Omadee Bailey, and Frances Whitman (Gene); her brother, Douglas Steele (May); her son-in-law, Randall McDaniel; and great grandson, Austin Dean Ezell. She is survived by her loving children, Gretchen McDaniel, Carl Schaefer, Jr. (Shari), Carol Milster (Danny), and Dale Schaefer (Gladys), all of Birmingham; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces as well as great-nephews and great-nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Our Fathers Arms (Broken Stone Ministries) at ourfathersarms.org (388 Dogwood Lane, Jacksonville, AL 36265) or Alabama Baptist Childrens Homes & Family Ministries at alabamachild.org. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at 10:00 am., followed by a graveside service.
