Eugene Grady, age 100, of Pelham, passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday morning, May 30, 2024. He was born February 22, 1924, the son of Henry Woodfin Grady and Elizabeth Corn Grady in Towns County, Georgia. After high school he went to work for Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company in Fairfield. In 1942 his country called and he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the USS Kitty Hawk in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1946 he was Honorably Discharged and returned to Birmingham where he met and married the love of his life, Clariece Evelyn Bell. Together they shared 65 wonderful years and raised three children. Upon his return to Birmingham after World War II, he began his career with the BellSouth telephone company. He started as a lineman and worked his way up through the ranks to management. During later years he was very active with the Telephone Pioneers and he was heavily involved with their work to repair “Talking Book” machines for the visually disabled. In addition to his selfless service with the Pioneers, he served many years on the Alabama Telco Credit Union Board of Directors. His leadership stood out and he was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. His wife Clariece, lovingly known as “Mama G” by the children and grandchildren she loved and who deeply loved her, preceded him in death in 2011. In later life, he was known as “Grandaddy” by the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved him dearly. He was also preceded in death by his son Steven E. Grady. He is survived by his two daughters Sydney G. Ellis (Buster) of Pelham and Patricia G. Milling (Keith) of Hoover; six grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye and the source of many great life events for Grandaddy; they are Justen Ellis (Catherine), Brendan Ellis (Cynthia), Grady Ellis, Haviland M. Poundstone (Phillip), Hunter Milling and Chris Milling (Kristen). Eleven absolutely perfect great-grandchildren; Storm Ellis, Caroline Ellis, Alexander Ellis, Elizabeth Ellis, Jack Ellis, Adelaide Ellis, Penelope Poundstone, Cece Milling, Chapel Poundstone, Holland Milling and Emmett Poundstone. He also leaves many great friends, too many to name, but he would want to recognize his Sunday School class at Riverchase United Methodist in Hoover. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1:00 to 2:00 on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at John-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Avenue SW, Birmingham, with a gravesite ceremony to follow at Elmwood Cemetery at 2:00 with military honors.
