Born Elizabeth Lee Newton in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 23, 1934, she was adopted by
Grover Cleveland Newton and Amelia Griffith Newton (nee Stateler). As a born and raised
Louisvillian, she loved the Kentucky Derby and held a special place in her heart for her
hometown, regardless of where she was residing.
After graduating from Atherton High School in 1952, Elizabeth attended the University of
Louisville, whose basketball team she was a lifelong fan of. She met her husband, Ronald
Moore Anderson, while he was attending Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. They
married on June 4, 1955, and had seven (7) children together, all while serving several
congregations from Kansas to Ohio to New Jersey. They were married until Ronald’s death in
1999.
In 1982, Elizabeth returned to Louisville to pursue studies in divinity at Louisville Presbyterian
Seminary, the same institution where her husband and then son-in-law had studied. She and
much of her family remained in Louisville until 2007 when Elizabeth moved to Birmingham,
Alabama. She has been an active member in the community of Greenbriar at the Altamont in recent years.
Beyond her love for the Derby and basketball, Elizabeth was also a skilled artist and painter.
She took great joy in her arts and crafts which reflected her unique style and outlook of the
world. She also enjoyed helping others discover the joys of art, from her tenure serving as a
docent at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, to leading arts and crafts workshops for her
fellow residents at Greenbriar.
Elizabeth is survived by her children, Carolyn Anderson Brockman (Matt Hunter), of Birmingham
Alabama; Anita Lee Anderson, Nadine Anderson, and Susan Anderson, all of Louisville,
Kentucky; and Ruth Anderson Terry (Cale Terry) of Pinson, Alabama; one grandchild, Charlotte
Marie Brockman, of Oakland, California; and two step-grandchildren, Charles Scofield
Hunter-Cook (Stephanie Hunter-Cook) of Birmingham, Alabama, and Allen Todd Hunter
(Cassandra Pulhalla) of Boulder, Colorado.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by her children, Lawrence “Larry”
Moore Anderson, and Nancy Scott Anderson; and son-in-law, the Rev. R. George Brockman III.
Service to her community and ministry was an important value to Elizabeth all her life. In
addition to volunteering at the Speed, she also volunteered at the Birmingham Zoo, and served
in many leadership roles and committees for her congregations throughout her life. In lieu of
flowers, please make donations to Independent Presbyterian Church or to the community
ministry of your choice.
A Memorial Service is planned for Elizabeth N. Anderson on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 11:00 am, at Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
