Don was born on March 28, 1932 in Marion County, Alabama, the son of Luther S. and Maggie Donaldson Rogers. He grew up in Sandusky, Alabama, where he met the love of his life, Gerry Lefoy.
Don graduated from Phillips High School in 1950 where he was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. He received a football scholarship to Auburn University from which he graduated in 1954. Don lettered in football at Auburn, was a member of the Arnold Air Society and the ROTC program. During his football days at Auburn, he and his brother, George Rogers, became known as the two bookends of the Auburn offensive line.
Upon graduation from Auburn, Don fulfilled his military duties with the U.S. Air Force where he was a Captain. Following his military service, he was a pharmaceutical sales representative for Eaton Labs and J.B. Roerig, Divisions of Pfizer, Inc. In the early 1970s, Don and his brother, George, formed Rogers/Site Construction Company, a home building company which built hundreds of homes for families in the eastern area of Birmingham.
During his lifetime, Don graciously gave his time, talent and efforts to developing young people in sports and to his beloved sport of football where he officiated high school football games for years and became a founding member of the Metropolitan Football Officials Association. He was also certified as an official with the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Don was affiliated for many years with the Huffman High School Boosters Club and the Auburn Football Letterman's Club. He was also a member of the Birmingham Homebuilders Association.
Don was a long-time member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Huffman and more recently Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church. Don served in many different capacities at his church and loved his church family.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Maggie Rogers, his brother and best friend, George Rogers, with whom he shared so much of his life and found so much happiness, and his wife, Gerry Lefoy Rogers, to whom he was married for almost 65 years. Mr. Rogers is survived by his children Steve Rogers (Angie), Sherri Boyd (Ken), and Kelli O’Reilly (Andy). Don was also blessed to be a PawPaw to his seven grandchildren: Stephanie Alexander (Ryan), Matthew Rogers, Ashley Rogers, Sara Courington (Cody), Travis Boyd (Haley), Rusty Boyd (Amanda), Felicity O’Reilly; and eleven great-grandchildren: Rileigh Alexander, Caden Rogers, Riggin Courington, Roper Courington, Westlynn Courington, Ryker Courington, Blakely Boyd, Henley Boyd, Charlee Kate Boyd, Austen Boyd, and Shepherd Boyd.
Don Rogers will be remembered for many things - an athlete, a coach, a businessman, a tireless supporter of church, civic and high school programs, but most especially, as a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all.
Services will include a visitation on Sunday, July 2, 2023 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Ridout's Trussville Chapel with a funeral on Monday, July 3, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Wilson Chapel UMC with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Wilson Chapel UMC in memory of Don.
