DAVID CRAWFORD JORDAN, SR., age 87 of Birmingham, went home to Jesus on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Crawford Jordan and Sara Ann Whitehurst Jordan; son, James Dale Jordan; 7 sisters and 2 brothers. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dale Bourland Jordan; son, David C. Jordan, Jr. (Phyllis); daughter, Jeanna Jordan Meadows (Matthew); 16 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born to a musical family, David learned to play the baritone at a young age. He accepted Christ as his savior at age 13 when he went to visit his brother, Bubba, in Charlotte, NC at a Billy Graham revival. After graduating Woodlawn High School, David earned a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University. A knee injury sent him home to Birmingham where he played for Howard College (now Samford University). He met and married the love of his life, Dale and went to work as a structural steel draftsman for American Bridge Division (U.S. Steel). Later, he was an owner of Jemco Drafting.
David was first ordained as a deacon at Ruhama Baptist Church and served as such in North Orange Baptist (TX), Roebuck Park Baptist, and his current church, South Roebuck Baptist. Always musical, he served in the choir at all the above churches. He dusted off his baritone and played in the church orchestras also.
David expressed his faith outside of church life by participation in several ministries- Gideon's International, the Boys Industrial School, and the Jimmy Hale Mission.
He played for several years in the Birmingham Community Concert Band where he got the joy of being in the band at the same time with two of his sisters, Caroline and JoAnn and brother, Tim.
Throughout his three children's growing up years he coached YMCA football and participated in the Y Indian Guides and Princesses. He also cheered each child on as they individually played sports, learned instruments, and performed in various plays and musicals. Just doing what a good dad does! He had his family at church whenever the church doors were open and he encouraged each in their individual walk with the Lord. He loved his grands and great-grands and went to as many of their life events as he possibly could.
His family will celebrate his life with visitation on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 from 1-2 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel with his service beginning at 2 PM. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
