David Robert Busby

David R. (Chick) Busby, age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 4, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was a kind and generous man, who lived his life with integrity and honor, and everyone who knew him, whether a long time or a short time, loved him. David was a longtime member of Shades Crest Baptist Church in Hoover, AL. He grew up in the Central Park area of Birmingham, attended Glenn High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degree from the University of Alabama. He worked for the United States Courts as a Probation Officer from 1976 until he retired in 1996. He was also a firearms and criminal justice instructor and a part-time dog trainer. After retirement, he drove a school bus for 12 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Marguerite Busby. He is survived by his wife, Gayle, two daughters, Jill High (Craig) of Biloxi, Mississippi, Tonya Dedmon (Steve) of Hoover, Alabama, his sister, Glenda Hinkle (Gene) of Sylacauga, Alabama, four grandchildren, Avery Norman (Clay), Kendall High, Emily and Sam Dedmon, two nieces, Kim Gawlowicz (Bruce) and Wendy Montealegre (Mark).

A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 from 10:00am-11:00am at Shades Crest Baptist Church located at 452 Park Ave. Hoover, AL. 35226 with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 11:00am. Burial will follow immediately at Elmwood Cemetery. There will not be a funeral procession or police escort to the cemetery after the service. Family and friends are asked to meet in the front parking lot of Elmwood Chapel located at 800 Dennison Ave. SW Birmingham, AL. 35211 and we will all process to the gravesite together.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests any memorial gifts be made to Shades Crest Baptist Church, 452 Park Avenue, Birmingham, AL 35226 or the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB.
