Claudia Kay Dixon, age 68 of Birmingham passed away Monday, April 26, 2021. Claudia was born in Indiana before moving to Birmingham in 1984. She grew up on a family farm in Kokomo, Indiana. She played string bass and was in the school jazz and symphony bands. She worked for A&P for several years where she met the love of her life, Gary (a city boy). Claudia then worked with the Birmingham City Schools as a teacher aide and then educational interpreter. She also was involved with the Birmingham Area Interpreter Training, Inc. (BAIT, Inc.) group for 15 years. She gave over 40 years of her time and money to support the Deaf and Christian communities while raising her own two children. Claudia was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Thelma Lybrook; brother, Gary Lybrook; brother-in-law, Dick Welch, and father-in-law James Dixon. Survivors include her husband Gary Dixon; daughter Myriah Dixon; son Matthew Dixon; sisters Joy Welch and Alexis Taubert; mother-in-law Anona Dixon; sister-in-law Beverly (Joe) Albright; sister-in-law LouAnn Lybrook; several nieces and nephews, as well as many other extended family members in Indiana. Claudia taught us to give of ourselves, support your friends and family when they are in need, and help others any way you can. Many deaf students’ lives were impacted by her generosity and efforts to help them reach their full potentials. She fought for improvements in the field of deaf education and ASL/English interpreting. Her first Memorial Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham, AL. Another Celebration of Life service will take place at the Living Stone Church 69 W Main St. Rossville, Indiana on Saturday, May 29, 2021. The family will receive friends from 11am until the noon service time. They ask you to wear purple (her favorite color) as we celebrate Claudia’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish, donate in memory of Claudia Dixon to “Deafquake”, a Christian camp for the Deaf and hard of hearing children and teens in Alabama.
