Christine (Chris) Cook Kirby, age 98, of Birmingham passed away quietly on September 16, 2023. She was a lifelong follower of the Lord and now rejoices in Heaven. Chris lived a full life growing up with three brothers and two sisters on Birmingham’s west side. She was the loving mother to three children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Chris was also proud to be a long-time member of Lakeside Baptist Church where she sang in the senior choir.
In her later years, her greatest love was time with family or long phone calls. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed writing Bible verses or famous quotes on scrap pieces of paper. She then compiled over 400 of these into a notebook that we refer to lovingly as “Mom’s sayings”. Mom also enjoyed going on church trips, walking in the neighborhood, and returning to her youth by going to ballroom dances.
She was married for 35 years to Dr. Thomas W. Kirby DMD who passed away in 1983. She is survived by her sister Marie (Jim) Sides of Edmond, Oklahoma. Surviving children include Farley Kirby (Mary), Marsha Kirby Bentley, and Myron Kirby (Melanie). Surviving grandchildren and great grandchildren include Kerrie Benson and her sons Rocky and Colt, grandson Jason Kirby (Ellen) and son Henry, granddaughter Katherine Pitts (Joey) and daughter Olivia and son Jack, grandson Brandon Kirby (Lisa) and daughter Berkley and grandson Brian Kirby. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Kelly Kirby in 2015.
Her funeral service will be open to all family and friends. Please join us at Elmwood Cemetery on Thursday, September 21 at 2 pm for her Graveside service. All attendees will gather in front of the Elmwood Chapel building at 1:45pm to form a processional that will drive to her final resting place.
The Kirby family would like to send our greatest love and appreciation to Monark Grove Senior Facility, Fair Haven Nursing Home, Honeybee Homecare, Hope Hospice and Pastor Herman Pair for all the wonderful the care and compassion provided for Mom during her journey to her Heavenly Home.
