Mr. Charles Floyd, Sr., 75, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior early on the morning of June 20, 2023. There to welcome him home were his parents, William Barnes, Sr. and Ruby Glenn Barnes; his son, Charles Floyd, Jr.; and brothers, William Barnes, Jr. and Lawrence Barnes. Charles leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 54 years, Wilma Mason Floyd; children, Abdul Demond (Shonia) Floyd and Mitrekenya Denise (Ralph) Aldridge ; grandchildren, Nikkia Albert, Nikkara Albert (Avohom) Carpenter , Tarvin “Trel” Dukes, Joshua Floyd, and Alexandria Floyd; and a host of nieces, nephews and great grandchildren; sisters, Charlene Bracy-Flenor, Constance (Ray) Payne, and Phyllis Floyd ; and brother, Michael (Jevonia) Barnes; and sister in-law, Pamela Barnes.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was well decorated with many medals and ribbons upon his honorable discharge. He attended Lawson State, where he earned his Associates Degree and Miles College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work. He graduated with honors, Cum Laude. Charles retired from Seaboard Systems/CSX after many years as a Switchman Foreman and upon retirement a Retarder Operator. Charles was a man after God's own heart. He enjoyed serving with his Christian Valley church family and loved singing his favorite song in the choir, "My God is Real". Charles was an avid sports fan and enjoyed football, basketball, golf and others sports. His favorite team was the University of Alabama. He could be heard throughout the neighborhood shouting "Roll Tide!" with all of his neighbors. He served his community by coaching little league football for the West End Panthers and as a basketball coach for the PING basketball team. Coach Floyd was the uncle and bonus dad to many children in the neighborhood. He was definitely an important part of the village that raised the community’s kids, helped them learn discipline and how to stand on their own feet.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Christian Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Collegeville from 12pm until 1pm. A celebration of Charles’ life will follow at 1pm. He will be laid to rest with his son at Birmingham’s historic Elmwood Cemetery.
