Betty Joyce Bolton Mills was born in Talladega County Alabama, January 23, 1932. She was a 1950 graduate of Sylacauga High School. She attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, where she met her husband Donald F. Mills who was stationed at Maxwell AFB. She graduated from Huntingdon College with a degree in Biology and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from UAB.
During her Teaching career she taught at Disque Jr. High in Gadsden, Woodlawn High School and Franklin Academy in Birmingham, Pell City High School, Briarwood Christian High School and while she working on her Masters she taught Microbiology Labs at UAB. She later worked at City Federal and subsequently Regions Bank from which she retired in 2006.
A lifelong Methodist she served in the UMW at numerous churches, as Choir Director at Asbury Methodist in Montgomery, as a Youth Leader and Choir Member at Grace UMC Birmingham, and also sang in the choirs at East Lake UMC and Irondale UMC. She was a member of the Women’s Junior Chamber of Commerce and the American Business Women’s Association.
Affectionately known as “Ms. Betty”, Mama, or Grandmaw, she was loved by just about everyone she met . She was preceded in death by her parents Willie Bolton and Lillian House Bolton of Sylacauga, her husband of 29 years, Donald F. Mills, and her brothers Clyde William Bolton of Pensacola, and Henry Lynn Bolton of Montgomery. She is survived by her sons Donald F. Mills, Jr. and Michael W. Mills, numerous Nieces, Great Nieces and Great Nephews. A private Graveside Service will be held Monday, March 30, with Memorial Service to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations may be made through Go-Fund-Me - Ms. Betty’s Memorial Fund, or to Irondale United Methodist Church.
