Betty W. Mathews Reese

Betty W. Mathews Reese of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019, at the age of 91. She was born on February 14, 1928, to the late James Roscoe and Maud Johnson Whitley. Also preceding her in death is her first husband, James Arthur (Jim) Mathews, Jr.; her son, James Terry Mathews; and her sister, Doris (Larry) King.

Betty was Executive Secretary at Sonat, Inc. for many years and was a member of various organizations including Executive Women International, where she served as President. She was an avid golfer and spent many hours playing at Grayson Valley Country Club.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Freeman Reese; her son, Randy Mathews and his wife, Teresa Reynolds Mathews; three step-daughters, Deborah (Landall) Owens; Cendia Reese; and Connie (Mark) Elkins; grandchildren, Wendy (Dean) Rothman; Steven Mathews; Andrea (Chad) Carpenter; Chris (Nadine) Mathews; and Mike Reynolds (Jerri Ann and brother of Teresa) who was embraced as a grandson; great-grandchildren, Crystal Mathews; Katelyn and Carrie Mathews; Will Carpenter; Zoe Mathews; and numerous step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

A visitation for Betty will be held at Huffman Methodist Church, 711 Gene Reed Rd, Birmingham, AL 35235, on Monday, July 8, 2019, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM with a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Steven Mathews, Chris Mathews, Chad Carpenter, Mike Reynolds, Mike Mathews, and Joe King.

Special thank you to the nurses on the 4th-floor orthopedics and CICU at St. Vincent’s East and to St. Martins in the Pines Hospice Unit for their care, compassion, and love extended to Betty during her stay.
