After a long and wonderful life Betty Jean Vick Duncan, age 90, of Cropwell, AL passed away Thursday, July 22, 2021. She was a Birmingham native. Mrs. Betty Duncan was born March 2, 1931, to Lessie Livingston Vick and Henry Earl Vick.She graduated from Woodlawn High School and married her high school sweetheart, Roy Rufus Duncan Jr., on August 26, 1950, at East Lake Methodist Church.
During her time at Howard College Betty was active in her sorority. After marriage, she and Roy moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. Soon afterward, they opened and operated Duncan Drug Store at Seymour Tenn. on The Gatlinburg Highway. Returning to Birmingham, they opened Duncan Drug Store on The Gadsden Highway at Roebuck Plaza. When their store burned, they joined her parents as owners of Livingston Nursing Home in Bessemer, where Betty was an administrator. After retiring, they moved from Indian Springs to Foley, AL and then to Cropwell, AL on Lake Login Martin. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Roy in 2009, her parents, and her sister Marjorie Vick Cain along with Mrs. Cain’s husband, Larry Cain. She is survived by her three adoring children and their spouses: Roy R. Duncan III and Cherri Duncan of Mobile, AL Margie Holder and William “Bill” Holder of Cropwell, AL Pamela Duncan and Kari Lampley-Duncan of Pensacola, FL, her two grandchildren: Melody Duncan and Christopher Duncan, his wife, Courtney Duncan, and great grandson: Jack Duncan of Mobile, AL, nephew: Stephen Lamar Cain of Mt. Brook, AL. Also surviving is Betty’s life-long friend of 90 years: Mrs. Betty Jean Abercrombie Blair of Georgia. Betty and Roy were able to retire in 1986, they enjoyed travelling and living on the Gulf Coast before moving to Cropwell, AL on Lake Login Martin. Betty was a member of Pell City United Methodist Church. The family would like to express deep appreciation to Lakeside Hospice and the dedicated professionals at St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital along with the wonderful staff at The Village at Cook Springs.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at 11:00am at Elmwood Cemetery.
