Barry was born to the late Elizabeth (Babe) Slater and William M. Slater on May 9, 1945 in Macon, GA. Barry graduated from Henry Grady High School in Atlanta, GA. where he was a great defensive and offensive lineman for their football team. One of his teammates said Barry was “the funniest big defensive lineman he ever met.” There are many funny stories about Barry still running around Atlanta.
Barry carried his wit and humor with him into the wholesale/retail clothing business in downtown Birmingham- Slater Sales- for over 35 years. It is said one of his friends asked “how can somebody kill someone? Barry replied, evidently my dear, you’ve never been in retail.” He was a true comedian at heart. Another line of his was, “we only take returns back at our main location in Budapest.”
Barry loved his sons, Mark and Steven. He took his sons to sporting events, rock concerts, and many family vacations to the beach and his favorite city, New York City where he introduced them to Carnegie Deli pastrami.
Barry is predeceased by his son, Steven Slater in 2005 and his sister, Iris Slater Weiner in 1986.
